At IndySchool Consultancy, we believe that staying informed about the latest trends and challenges in the independent school sector is essential for school leaders. That's why we conduct a monthly survey called the ISC Pulse Survey, which provides valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of teachers, administrators, and heads of school. In September, our focus was on job satisfaction and career aspirations, and we received an impressive response from 82 participants, making this survey truly representative of the independent school community.
Hiring a head of school is one of the most critical decisions an independent school can make. The head of school serves as the leader, guiding the vision and direction of the entire organization. However, when this decision goes wrong and a bad hire is made, the consequences can be far-reaching and costly.
During the search for a new head of school, it is imperative for search committees to distinguish between finding a candidate who "fits" their expectations and what the school truly requires.
The pandemic has brought about significant changes in the independent school landscape, particularly when it comes to senior administrative searches. At IndySchool Consultancy, we understand the importance of adapting to these changing tides and assisting schools and candidates in navigating this new reality.
Schools are constantly evolving and facing unique challenges. There are certain, identifiable moments that are new chapters in a school’s history. These include a head of school transition, a new strategic plan, and a new capital campaign. Before any of these momentous events, school boards and school leaders should consider an Institutional Assessment.
At IndySchool Consultancy, we believe that taking the time to gain a deep understanding of a school's culture, and past, present, and future is crucial to providing a comprehensive institutional assessment. This stage in the process is often overlooked or diminished by traditional firms, but we understand that it is one of the most important parts of our work.

With a shortage of school leadership across all regions in independent schools, isn't it time to reinvent the outdated Stone Age search process? It's evident that the traditional leadership search model is outdated.

As Ian Symmonds wrote in his blog post titled “Isn’t It Time To Redesign The Stone Age Search Process”, we sought to do just that. Head terms are getting shorter. Administrators are leaving their schools for other opportunities. Why is this? While there are a number of factors at play, including burnout from the pandemic or unclear expectations, I find the single greatest factor of short tenures and abrupt departures is a void of happiness in the position.
