Our Competency Based Approach
By Tim Viands
Competency-based hiring is IndySchool Consultancy’s approach to the search process. After years of research on the independent school hiring market, head turnover and the leadership pipeline, we created a search model that aims to ensure longer tenures, happy schools and happy leaders.
We focus on identifying specific skills, knowledge and abilities required for specific independent school jobs. Rather than focusing on traditional factors such as experience, we assess a candidate’s potential for success in a role based on their demonstrated competencies. Our approach has numerous benefits for schools and candidates.
Main Points:
Improved Hiring Quality
One of the most significant benefits of our competency-based approach is that it leads to improved hiring quality. By focusing on specific competencies required for the position, schools can more accurately assess a candidate’s potential for success in that role. This leads to better hiring decisions, which can reduce the cost and time associated with recruitment and on-boarding.
Increased Diversity and Inclusion
Our competency-based approach can also increase the diversity within a school. Traditional hiring and search methods may inadvertently screen out qualified candidates who do not meet traditional criteria such as education and experience. Our process, on the other hand, allows schools to identify candidates who possess the skills and abilities, regardless of their previous work experience.
Enhanced Employee Performance
Hiring employees based on their competencies can also enhance their performance on the job. Our search process ensures that the “hired” candidate has the skills and knowledge required to succeed in their role, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity. This, in turn, can improve organizational performance and achieve better outcomes.
Improved Employee Retention
Competency-based hiring can also improve retention rates. When heads and administrators are hired based on their competencies, they are more likely to be engaged and satisfied with their job. They are also more likely to feel that they have the skills and knowledge to succeed in their role, which can lead to increased confidence and motivation.
Better Succession Planning
Competency-based hiring can also help a school with succession planning. By identifying specific competencies, schools can ensure they are hiring employees who have the potential to grow and develop. This can lead to better succession planning and ensure the school has a strong leadership pipeline.
Our competency-based search process is an innovative and effective approach to school leadership. While the resume / CV is still important, our school / position specific Profile of the Leader will ensure the right candidates are identified, which will lead to happy schools, happy leaders and longer tenures.
